Timex Expedition WS4 Watch Review: A Bit Of Wrist Adventure

Thanks John for the sentiments and thoughts - he blogs occasionally on watches here at Watch Space.

The strap is really cool as well. It isn't new for this watch, but Blancpain as always provided an super high quality coated canvas strap that is retr0, comfortable, and stylish all at the same time. So there you have it, a brand new, really interesting sports watch from Blancpain that furthers the reach of the "Fathoms" watch line. We have really come far from that watch developed to only be resistant to 50 fathoms under water. For me, the 50, and now the 500 Fathoms have always had a place on that short list of, "if I could only wear one watch, I would have one of these watches." Maybe you feel the same. Price will likely be over ,000, probably shy of ,000.

Aside from the eye catching face, I think you’ll agree that the case of the watch is very sleek and well integrated. The rubber strap integrated perfectly with the long curved lugs, and I like how the crown fits flush with the case when not in use. If you look closely, you’ll notice that the entire 44mm wide watch case is tapered a bit to resemble an entire jet engine structure.

It should be clear how the time is displayed. The dial is constructed from three circular plates, each with a section of inset diamonds (or diamond). These sections are the hour, minute, and seconds indicators. The central seconds spins continuously thanks to the Calibre BL706 Automatic movement inside of the watch. The movement is actually quite impressive as it contains a rotor that winds the movement no matter which direction it is spinning in, and is set on ceramic ball bearings that help reduce friction. You can see an image of the rotor in the image of the back of the watch - how cool is that with the "blu" logo as the rotor?

These cufflinks (cuff links? Space, no space?) might make you blush, but they are nice right? To me they combine a few thinks I like. Let's delay the obvious for now and focus on the awesome integration of the automatic rotors in the cufflinks. These are new 18k rose gold men's cufflinks from Milus, a Swiss watch maker who also dabbles in jewelry and accessories.   These nice looking men's accessories here are called Kama Sutra Butterfly cufflinks and are made in a casting process to help reproduce the look of a watch movement, which is the point. The cufflinks feature beautiful real rotating rotors (which wind nothing) that attached like normal rotors with a ball bearing mount. The casted gold has perlage polish and the look of a real movement engraved in the design. How cool! I've seen cufflinks similar to this, but none as well done. I imagine price will be up there.

Set with diamonds and rubies, the Perrelet Diamond Flower Rotor Watch defines its aesthetic both inside and out. While it's lovely to think of the weight of a mechanic watch being cast in gold or platinum, and often with guilloche patterns mimicking the face of the dial, this Perrelet Diamond Flower Rotor Watch goes one step further with the double rotor rotating both inside and out.

I find that it is my duty to share with you information about  limited offerings of unique and attractive watches that you might not learn about anywhere else. This is the case with this limited edition Arctos Elite GPW K1 watch constructed with a ceramic case. GPW stands for "German Precision Watch," which is honestly a silly phrase, but for a serious watch. All you need to get out of that name is that this Arctos watch is proudly German-made, which means it constructed well and a good value. Now, what makes this Arctos Elite GPW watch so interesting is that it is a limited edition concept based on another GPW watch model - the standard K1. The limited edition uses the same ceramic case (yes, the ultra hard - virtually scratch-proof - zirconium oxide compound) but with a much more interesting dial than the standard version. The limited edition is also less expensive than the standard model! How can that be? Well it really has to do with the fact that this is basically a concept watch. Arctos wanted to play around with interesting designs and released only 50 of these watches. The dial uses a jet black face with bright hour markers that are a mix of Arabic and Roman numerals. If you'd ask me in theory to say whether I thought this was a good look, I wouldn't be sure how to respond - but seeing it like this convinces me that this unique avant garde design firmly positioned between a functional militarist look and a designer style - is quite nice. I'd dare say handsome too.

Inside the watch is Omega's automatic Co-Axial escapement caliber 3603 movement with a column wheel chronograph, and of course the GMT complication. Good thing there is a date in there as well, and I like that Omega placed the date on a black colored disc under a tapered window. The movement is also a COSC certified chronometer. Overall, these movements are typically help in high regard. Going back to the dial, it should be obvious that the markers and hands are covered in SuperLumiNova as luminant. I am not sure that I am sold on the "Teak Concept" dial pattern with the vertical lines. I'd have to sit and stare at the watch for a long time to decide how I felt about it. I am always a fan of dial texturing, but it needs to be done right. If you can't tell the dial is gray colored. Another trendy gray watch! Again, I really do like the chronograph subdials though - these are done quite well. The crown is large and the rectangular chronograph pushers look comfortable to use. The watch is robust, but not true diver. Good enough for underwater duty though with 150 meters of water resistance. The sapphire crystal is also double AR coated - while the rear of the watch has another sapphire crystal as a caseback exhibition window.

The project aims to have 1000 Green Watches in Paris that will constantly be measuring the environment. The Green Watch contains a few pieces of technology including a GPS chip, Bluetooth chip, and the ozone (o3) and noise (dB) sesnors. In addition to telling the time (see the little hands on the watch), the dial has color coded sensors that change depending on the environment. Thus, the wearer knows whether the air quality is good or bad, and (if they are deaf) if it is a loud area. To have the watch itself send data over mobile digital networks would be too burdensome on the battery. Instead, the device connect via Bluetooth to a nearby mobile phone which relays the data in real time. In the event there is no mobile phone, the wearer can have the Green Watch auto synchronize with the City Pulse network by connecting it to their computer in a manner similar to an iPod.

The watches feature two "firsts."  Most obvious, is the unique chronograph pusher system that uses fold out levers to operate the chronograph. This helps prevent starting and stopping it accidentally. Second is the use of the Moon rock - in the way that it is used. Though I will add more images as I get them, you can't quite the see moon rock in these pictures. Notice the protruding section near 9 o'clock on the watch? The Moon rock is visible through the side of the watch there. Don't worry, the lunar rock is authenticated - and is of the rarest types of extraterrestrial materials found on Earth (much rarer than meteorites, and something that fell onto the Earth from the moon over 2000 years ago).

One of my true loves is, as you may know, Zenith. This is a brand that loves women. Not just as a target demographic that they are marketing to - but women as real. human. beings. For every type of woman out there, Zenith has a collection. And when you're proposing marriage, you should only give the best.

Looking at the supple, durable white rubber band, I can actually see this watch on a woman's wrist. Wish it was on mine. Tissot has built a rep for integrating different materials to create a watch that is versatile, durable, and priced well. With all the accents that they've included, like the checkered flags and Danica blue indicators, Tissot is definitely successful in their final product.

One of my favorite watch makers from a novelty standpoint is Van Cleef & Arpels. There is always a little bit of magic in their watches. In the video, the current philosophy behind the brand's watches is made very clear. Essentially they admit that people need watches less today (than in the past) to tell the time, as we can rely on phones and computers. However, luxury watches are still valued for what they call "whimsical complications." To this degree, art becomes as important as function in a watch - and the degree of creativity imbued in their line up is intriguing.

Another unique detail on the Moonflower is that the Hours, Minutes, and Seconds indicators have been replaced by traditional hands with 3 separate discs that move in harmony with the movement of the watch.

It should be clear how the time is displayed. The dial is constructed from three circular plates, each with a section of inset diamonds (or diamond). These sections are the hour, minute, and seconds indicators. The central seconds spins continuously thanks to the Calibre BL706 Automatic movement inside of the watch.
